Special guests and media attend the Solar Decathlon 2009 opening ceremony.
The U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2009 took place in October on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
The Solar Decathlon is a competition in which teams of college and university students compete to design, build, and operate the most attractive, effective, and energy-efficient solar powered house. The 2009 Solar Decathlon is the fourth competition; the inaugural event was held in 2002, the second in 2005, and the third in 2007.
The Solar Decathlon is an educational project of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). It is organized by DOE's National Renewable Energy Laboratory and supported by event and team sponsors from the private sector.
