Department of Energy Announces 2007 Teams

The U.S. Department of Energy issues a news release announcing the twenty teams that have been selected to compete in the 2007 Solar Decathlon.

The Solar Decathlon is a competition in which teams of college and university students compete to design, build, and operate the most attractive, effective, and energy-efficient solar powered house. The 2007 Solar Decathlon is the third competition; the inaugural event was held in 2002 and the second in 2005. In late September 2007, college and university teams from around the world—the United States (including Puerto Rico), Canada, Germany, and Spain—join the competition's organizers and sponsors in Washington, D.C., to assemble a "solar village" on the National Mall. In addition to the team houses, the solar village features energy efficiency and renewable energy exhibits and activities for the visiting public. Houses are open for public tours during the event. During public tour hours, some of the team houses may be closed for competition purposes. The competition itself occurs concurrently, until an overall winner is announced.

The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy is the primary sponsor of the Solar Decathlon. DOE's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) sponsors and manages the event. The American Institute of Architects (AIA), the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), BP, and Sprint are title sponsors.
